Latin America smartens up to the mobile web

Latin America is a region where the mobile browser market is maturing, and a high-quality web experience via mobile is increasingly expected on mobile phones. At the same time, the transition from basic phones to smart phones is well underway, as shown in data gathered for the State of the Mobile Web report on Latin American mobile internet trends.

One mobile internet habit among Latin American users is very clear: visiting local websites is not as popular in Latin America as it is in other regions.

Latin American countries have more international sites in their top ten list than, e.g., the African countries examined in previous reports. Puerto Rico and Brazil have the most local sites in the top-ten lists, with three out of ten sites being local websites - all news or publishing sites such as Globo, UOL and Abril.

However, social sites in local languages matter. The Argentinian social website Taringa, available in Spanish and English, is found in the top-ten lists for six of 26 LatAm countries. Taringa, created and funded by Argentinians, has been on the web slightly longer than Facebook.

International sites remain - and have been for a long time -  the dominant sites. The Facebook and Google websites figure prominently in the top rankings of LatAm websites for each country. In all examined countries, the two sites were in the top two spaces, alternating between them for the top spot. Other international sites such as Yahoo!, Wikipedia, Blogger and YouTube make up much of the rest of the lists for most Latin American countries.

Classifieds ad sites, such as Mercado Libre and OLX, are popular in Latin America. With the presence of these sites in several top-ten lists, selling and buying via classifieds seems to be more popular than commercial sites, which are not present in any of the top-ten lists this time.

    Smartphone takeover

Latin American users have come far in the adoption of smartphones. According to analyst predictions from LATAM telecom (http://etc-digital.org/digital-trends/mobile-devices/mobile-smartphones/regional-overview/latin-america/), the share of smartphones in Latin American countries will reach 50% in 2016, with Android having a solid lead among the pack.

In the statistics from Opera Mini users, the trend is also apparent. For example, in March 2013, a basic phone was on top of the device list for Chile, and 40% of the top-ten devices were basic phones. One year later, Chile has just a single basic phone in its March 2014 top-ten list of devices. Other nations, such the smaller nation of Puerto Rico also stands out in front of the drows having nine out of ten mobile devices being smartphones.

      About Opera Mini

Opera Mini is a proxy-based web browser for mobile phones, which compresses data for data savings and allows web surfing on slower mobile networks. This enables usage reports, based on anonymous and aggregated data accumulated from Opera Mini servers.
