The news hungry Nordic countries

During winter time, people in the Nordic countries like to snuggle up in their cabins with their mobile phones in front of a cozy fire and read up on what’s going in the world. For this State of the Mobile Web report, we provide a snapshot of the top local sites and smartphone statistics for the Nordic countries, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

Each of the countries has a very strong interest in local news sites. On average, 7 out of the 10 sites in the top-ten lists are news sites, including both newspapers and TV / radio broadcast services. For all countries, the top local domain is a national newspaper, such as Aftonbladet in Sweden, Iltalehti in Finland, VG in Norway and Ekstrabladet in Denmark. The top international domain is the search site Google.

The countries show similar surfing habits, such as a common interest in local news, but also some subtle differences in the top-ten lists of domains. One example is Sweden's apparent interest with informational service sites, often known as phonebook sites.

Sweden has two such sites in its top-ten most visited list, Denmark has one, while Norway and Finland have no such sites within their top ten.

Swedish and Finnish Opera Mini users also have an interest in family sites, such as Familjeliv.se and Vauva.fi. Both these sites are in the top-ten lists for these two countries.

    Smartphone nations

Opera Mini runs on a wide variety of non-smartphone mobile phone models, as well as on smartphones. With a presence on nearly all modern mobile phones capable of connecting to the internet, the share of Opera Mini users on smartphones can indicate the popularity of smartphones in a country.

By using anonymous and aggregated data from the Opera Mini servers, it is possible to compile lists of smartphone share of Opera Mini users in each country.

The smartphone trend is strong in the Nordic countries. Globally more than 40% of Opera mobile browser users are on smartphones, but, in all the Nordic countries, that number exceeds 50%. However, there are great variations in mobile penetration across the 4 Nordic countries. Norway is far, far ahead of the rest, with more than 82% of the population on smartphones, while neighboring Sweden ranked the lowest on smartphone penetration, with a mere 52%.

    About Opera Mini

The Opera Mini browser is a proxy-based web browser for mobile phones, which compresses data for data savings and allowing web surfing on slower mobile networks. With more than 250 million users each month, Opera Mini is available for smartphones such as Android and iOS phones and tablets, as well as basic phones only capable of running Java apps.

    Growth in usage

In January 2014, the consumer base of the Opera mobile browsers had more than 275 million unique users. The Opera Mini servers (which do not process pages from the Mobile Classic and Opera for Android browsers) served more than 189 billion pages and compressed over 18 petabytes of data for Opera Mini users. In all, 40% of the total users of the Opera mobile browsers are using smartphones to browse the web. Compared to January 2013, the total number of Opera mobile browsers users grew more than 16%, year over year.

    Number of mobile product users

In January 2014, there were over 275 million Opera mobile browsers users. Out of this number, 254 million were Opera Mini users and the rest were Opera for Android, Mobile Classic, Coast by Opera and Skyfire users, globally. Compared to January 2013, the number of Opera mobile browsers users combined grew 16%, year over year.
