Russian rise of the smartphones

Opera for Android users in Russia up 38% in fourth quarter

Russia leads the CIS region as the biggest market by a large margin, giving valuable pointers as to what is to come in mobile trends for other CIS countries. In this State of the Mobile Web report, we take a quick look at Russian mobile browsing habits, where the adoption of the Opera for Android browser is especially interesting. In Russia alone, the number of users of Opera for Android has increased by 38% since the third quarter of 2013.

However, it’s not only on the Android platform that we observe an interesting change in the smartphone top-ten lists. The Apple iPhone has risen from seventh place in the top-ten list of smartphones to third place in the last quarter of 2013. Combined, the fourth quarter of 2013 shows no sign of the smartphone trend cooling down in Russia.

The number of Russian users of Opera mobile browsers on smartphones has increased by 5% since the previous quarter in 2013; as of December 2013, more than 47% of the total number of Russian users of Opera Mini and Opera for Android are using smartphones to browse the web, above the global average for the users of Opera mobile browsers. The combined number of Opera mobile products on Android- and iOS-based smartphones in particular has increased by 11% in the Russian market.

Opera has also seen growth in mobile data usage among Opera Mini users in Russia: in the third quarter of 2013, data traffic in Russia has risen by 14.7%.
