State of the Mobile Web report for Nepal

Getting online in Nepal can be challenging, but internet users stay resourceful, using handsets to get connected to the world. In this State of the Mobile Web Report, Opera Software takes a closer look at the mobile internet usage among the Nepali.

Opera Mini, a mobile phone browser specially suited for getting online in tough conditions on everything from basic phones to advanced smartphones, remains a popular web browser in Nepal. From October 2012 to October 2013, the number of Opera Mini users in Nepal increased by 98%, nearly doubling over the year.

Some of the uptake in the Nepal market may be attributed to the fact that Opera Mini can run on older, less capable devices, but data also shows a rapid increase in smartphone usage in the country. The number of Opera Mini users on smartphones grew by 258% from October 2012 to October 2013. Smartphone users accounted for 28% of all Opera Mini users in October 2013. A whopping 20% of all Opera Mini users in Nepal use Android today, showing a significant uptake from October 2012 when only 10% of Nepali Opera Mini users were on Android.

Since Opera Mini is a proxy-based browser, meaning that all traffic passes through compression services run by Opera Software, it is possible to extract anonymous and aggregated data from the usage of Opera Mini. Traffic is booming globally, and also in Nepal. What kind of browsing leads the charge? Much like everywhere else in the world, social media is in the front of internet usage in Nepal.

Facebook leads mobile web usage

Nine out of every 10 webpages viewed by Nepali Opera Mini users from their mobile phones are from Facebook.com. Social networking’s popularity is followed by search using Google.com and downloads from waptrick.com.

Local news on mobile

The top three most visited local webpages by Opera Mini users in Nepal are news websites ekantipur.com, onlinekhabar.com and ujyaaloonline.com. This is a clear indicator that news is the most popular local content that users consume from their mobile devices.

Nokia handsets used most

An analysis of the top-100 handsets used by Opera Mini users in Nepal shows that Nokia is the clear leader in terms of market share. Nokia is used by 63% of users, followed by Samsung at 18% and LG and Micromax with 4% market share each.

Increasing smartphone users

The number of Opera Mini users on smartphones in Nepal increased by 258% in the last year, accounting for 28% of Opera Mini users. 20% of all Opera Mini users in Nepal use Android. This makes Android the second most popular mobile OS after Java.

Smartphone users browse more

Opera Mini users browsing the mobile web from smartphones browse more webpages and consume more data, compared to basic phone users. The average number of webpages viewed by smartphone users is 30% higher than basic-phone users.
