New eye candy from Opera-powered Samsung Blu-ray players

Oslo, Norway, and Seoul, Korea - April 30, 2013

Opera Software today announced that the Opera Devices Software Development Kit (SDK) has been deployed on some of the 2013 Samsung Blu-ray players, offering superior online video support for YouTube, BBC iPlayer and more. The new Opera-powered Samsung Blu-ray players provide viewers with the ultimate home entertainment experience by not only allowing viewers to watch their favorite Blu-ray Discs and DVDs, but also to enjoy various streaming video services with ease.

The Opera Devices SDK is an industry-leading development toolkit to build Smart TV solutions. With state-of-the-art web-standards support, such as HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, SVG, 2D Canvas and WebGL, the Opera Devices SDK gives connected devices a boost with better web-content rendering and streaming performance. By supporting the new standards "Media Source Extensions" and "Encrypted Media Extensions", the Opera's engine enables the YouTube Leanback application, which allows viewers to enjoy their favorite YouTube online videos on their TVs.

Now, more and more people want to leverage the size of their TVs to get a better experience while watching online video. Blu-ray players with built-in internet connectivity are increasingly used for this purpose. Samsung's Blu-ray players powered by Opera offer great performance and support for the latest web technology, resulting in easier and better access to popular online video services.

"Samsung has raised the bar for connected home entertainment products with the Opera Devices SDK," says Aneesh Rajaram, Senior Vice President of TV & Devices for Opera Software. "With best-in-class support for web and TV standards, plus unmatched rendering performance, the new Samsung Blu-ray players with popular web-based online video will make it even more tempting to stay on the couch."
