February 12, 2001

Opera updates popular Internet browser

OSLO, Norway - Feb. 13, 2001

Opera Software today released the first beta of Opera 5.0 for EPOC. EPOC is the standard industry technology for the next generation of mobile communication and computing products. The platform is promoted and marketed by Symbian, a joint venture established in partnership with Psion, Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and Matsushita (Panasonic).

EPOC is considered to be one of the most important platforms in the Post PC Era (PPE) of wireless Internet devices, and Opera with its EPOC technology is uniquely positioned to be the major player on the platform

"The previous version of Opera for EPOC - Opera 3.62 - was already widely considered to be the best browser available on the platform," says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software, "Opera's browser has garnered a lot of interest for the browser among manufacturers in the EPOC community," he ends.

Opera signed an agreement with Psion PLC last year, making Opera the default browser on the their Revo Plus and NetBook devices...

"Users will probably most enjoy the new multiple windows and bookmarks features in the interface, but "under the hood" modifications in updated HTML, stylesheets and JavaScript support is what really makes this the best Internet experience for the mobile Internet today," says Keith Hollis, Lead Developer EPOC, Opera Software.

Opera 5.0 for EPOC features Web browser functionality, full color (256 colors) support, full zooming key mapped to a range of zoom levels, 128-bit encryption, SSL 2 and 3, TLS 1.0, HTML 4.0, Support for Java Applets using EPOC native Java implementation, JavaScript 1.3, and CSS1 and 2, XML. Opera 5 for EPOC now also supports WAP-WML, allowing access to WAP sites from the browser.
